Obviously, both of these things are expensive enterprises. Sort of through a series of coincidences, I've been working for more than a year and a half now at the same dairy farm my SO has been at for 6+ years. The family allows us to keep laying hens & honey bee hives on the property, and my dog comes to work with me. I generally like the work and the family I work for, but it's not a sustainable job for me to stay in long-term for a number of reasons. No benefits, no OT pay, sometimes 80+ hour work weeks, 6+ days/week of work, no opportunity for advancement, and I get paid $11 / hr. I understand they can only cashflow what they can cashflow, but the pay rate is honestly completely unfair per my abilities, education, and the work I do. I would not be able to pay my bills if I wasn't splitting living expenses. I've been content working there because even though I don't want to work with dairy cattle in the future, there's a lot of knowledge and experience to be gained that can translate to the livestock I want to raise.
