I was very disappointed as my toddler daughter and I have really enjoyed several of Richard Scarry's entertaining and educational books so far, such as "Busy Busy Town. " However, I would definitely not want her to read a book like this and have since returned this book to Amazon. Great book - I could remember so many of the stories. Problematic wise, it's actually better than I thought it was going to be. There stereotypes galore of course, but usually around the way people are dressed rather than how they act, and the fact that they're all animals helps smooth it over. There is some sexism there, for example almost none of the women have names (eg they are all "Mrs tiger, Shaloms Wife, Toms Mummy") or jobs other than wife or girlfriend. So you just have have to change some names and roles around yourself if you're reading this as bed time stories.
