What Does an International Student Counselor Do? As an international student counselor, your job duties involve providing consultation services, academic and extracurricular guidance, and outreach for international exchange students at a college or university. Your responsibilities may include helping students with campus life, aiding them in finding support services, locating other students or advisors from their country of origin, and assessing their living arrangements. You may also perform crisis intervention services or come to the assistance of a student during an emergency. What Do You Need to Be an International Student Counselor? The qualifications you need to work as an international student counselor include a bachelor's degree in international relations or a related subject. Some employers prefer applicants who have a bachelor's degree in any discipline and experience in a study abroad or semester abroad program during college. If your employer expects you to provide counseling services for a specific group of students or students from a particular country, you must have second language skills and an understanding of the international students' culture.

The International Student Center (ISC) at Pasadena City College is the primary office on campus that assists Pasadena City College's international students. The International Student Center staff can help you with questions regarding registration, transfer, general education requirements, personal and financial planning, cross-cultural issues, immigration rules, and regulations, as well as community programs and resources. International student counselors assist students in designing their educational plans and prepare students for their transfer to a four-year university to continue their undergraduate education. Each semester, the International Student Pathway organizes an orientation program for all new international students that covers a broad range of topics including preparation for studying at an American college, health issues, personal safety, academic success, and other topics to help you get the most from your education at PCC.
We believe that helping students understand the academic material they need to succeed on a test or in the classroom is far better than teaching only test-taking tricks (though we teach those too! ). Many of our test-prep students begin to thrive in the classroom as a result of their improved academic preparation. Selective university admission is our specialty. Our experts have personal experience as former admissions officers at prestigious universities such as Harvard, Cornell, Stanford, University of Chicago, MIT, and Caltech. A minimum score of 500 is required. Note: Copies of the TOEFL Bulletin of Information for Candidates are available at most American embassies. The application to take the TOEFL test must be received by the Educational Testing Service at least four weeks before the testing date. Official Transcripts of all previous secondary school and college work including an official English translation. Translations are available through various agencies including: AERC - American Education Research Corporation International credential evaluation for university admission, immigration, and professional licensing. A letter of reference from a prominent person in your community, verifying character, background, and ability. A non-refundable application processing fee of $25. 00 in the form of a money order made payable to Crafton Hills College. Official documentation of birth date. No international students under eighteen years of age will be admitted. A recent photograph. Photocopies are not acceptable.
